tools and products I use
Here is a summary of the better products on the market. If you do buy the products through the Amazon links below, I do earn a small commission (at no extra cost to you), which helps in the running of this website.
Seachem Prime and Seachem Safe are good dechlorinators. Safe is a powdered, more economical version compared to Prime, but the powdered version is very concentrated and maybe troublesome for measuring out for smaller tanks.
For increasing Magnesium levels without increasing calcium levels, use Magnesium Sulphate by Epsoak
The Nutrafin Phosphate Test Kit is quite accurate for phosphates testing.
API Quickstart is good to kickstart tank cycling. This reduces cycling time to less than a week even when using ammonia rich substrates such as ADA aquasoil. (still need to do required water changes for first week though).
Seachem Equilibrium raises GH and contains Potassium, Calcium, Magnesium and minor trace elements. This product does not alter KH.
The API Ammonia Test Kit is easy to use. Results take awhile to appear, colour change is not immediate.
Aquarium Münster is a concentrated starter bacteria kit that speeds up cycling time.
NilocG Aquatics KH Booster raises KH and potassium levels at the same time.
The Seachem Nitrate Test works well for testing nitrate levels; comes with a calibration solution and is one of the more accurate kits (to 2ppm levels or so) available at hobbyist price ranges.
